The jewel in the crown, the pinnacle of HPV racing, the toughest race of them all, the 24hr Australian International Pedal Prix, returns to Murray Bridge this weekend.
After a COVID enforced three year absence, Human Powered Vehicle racing, or Pedal Prix, as it is more fondly known, is in the final stages of ramping up to take to the brilliant riverside venue of Sturt Reserve.
More than 150 racing trikes will compete at the transformed and tranquil setting by the water to test man and machine over a grueling 24hours, in what is a true test of endurance. Starting at 12 noon Saturday, and concluding under the chequered flag the same time Sunday, teams of up to 15 riders will persist and prolong, stopping briefly only for rider changes, to ensure the highest placing possible.
“Just to be back racing this year has been a major achievement in itself after a tough time through COVID, so to get to the end of the season and be back here for this very special event is tremendous,” said Series CEO Marcus Lacey. “Murray Bridge is a great place to come and race, we must thank the Rural City of Murray Bridge for their support and the people of the region for their welcoming attitude.”
This will be the 36th running of the event, which is the sixth and final round of the UniSA Australian HPV Super Series. Teams will race for category honours, as well as outright, with both school based outfits and open racers taking to the track.
In the senior school category, watch out for Pembroke, Murray Bridge High School and Saint Peters to battle at the front, and in the Open Category, Aurora, Wattle Racing and Platt Racing will all be vying for the win.
Some 10,000 people are expected to attend over the three day carnival, with first on track action being practice scheduled for Friday evening. Entry into the venue is $15 per head and $15 per vehicle with full camping facilities available.
